The Globe and Mail’s Most Liveable Cities List for 2026 had Summerland with an overall ranking of 80 out of 454 communities.

This is an increase of 171 spots from a year ago.

Among other small cities, Summerland placed 27th, and in the Community category, Summerland was rated fifth in Canada.

The ranking list examines data from 454 communities based on variables including economy, housing, demographics, health care, safety, education, transportation and public amenities.

“Being recognized as one of the Canadian communities with the biggest jumps in livability is really great for our town,” said deputy mayor Erin Trainer. “I believe it’s the result of all Summerlanders embracing what our town has to offer — from safety to our natural environment to social activities – and creating a sense of belonging and community. We take care of each other, acknowledge our challenges and celebrate our achievements together.”

The explanation for the Summerland ranking also said residents experience 69 per cent less likelihood of crime than the Canadian average in the Public Safety category.

In the explanations for Summerland’s ranking, the Globe and Mail said a new system of parks has helped to improve Summerland’s ranking.

Other efforts, including the Wharton Street Redevelopment Project, multi-use pathways, trail improvements and other initiatives have also helped to improve Summerland’s score in this list.
