The Toronto Argonauts have signed a pair of American defensive backs, Anthony Wilson and Reed Martin, the latter of whom possesses an intriguing dual skillset.
Martin also served as the primary punter over four seasons at Edinboro University, averaging 41 yards across 207 total punts. He landed 74 kicks inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and produced 38 punts of 50 or more yards, including a career-long of 77 yards. The native of Plum, Pa., was named a first-team Division II All-American as a punter in 2022, first-team all-conference in 2024 and 2022, and second-team all-conference in 2021.
The five-foot-10, 190-pound specialist also saw considerable time on defence, tallying 107 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 10 knockdowns, two interceptions, and a blocked kick in 42 career games with the Fighting Scots.
As a kicker, Martin connected on 7-of-14 field goals with a long of 48 yards, hit 14 extra point attempts, and averaged 59 yards on 147 kickoffs. On trick plays, he caught one pass for 13 yards, rushed six times for 124 yards, and completed four passes for 70 yards with one interception.
Wilson played exclusively as a defensive back, suiting up in 26 games over two seasons at West Virginia and recording 182 tackles, three interceptions, and seven knockdowns. The five-foot-nine, 191-pound coverman transferred from Georgia Southern, where he notched 246 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and 23 knockdowns in 39 appearances. He was named third-team All-Sun Belt in 2021 and an honourable mention in both 2020 and 2022.
The Toronto Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Franchise quarterback Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final the previous year, giving way to Nick Arbuckle, who threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s candidate for Most Outstanding Player.
The Argonauts ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, the leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and the leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. Toronto ranked ninth in attendance with average crowds of 15,109, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
