As a massive Mike Patton fan, I regularly daydream of a moment where I get to share the stage with him. It’s a pipe dream, I know, but certain folks get to live out that dream like fellow self-proclaimed Patton fan Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows.

Mr. Bungle’s been opening for Avenged Sevenfold while in Chile during their Latin American tour. During their February 3 performance at Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the band began playing “Retrovertigo” off their 1999 album California. It’s a departure from the thrashy stuff they’ve been touring on over the last couple years since the release of The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo, but a fan favorite nonetheless.

As you can see in the clip below, the performance goes on until just before the song’s big climax, at which point M. Shadows comes out and takes over vocals as Patton and bassist/vocalist Trevor Dunn provide backing harmonies.

I personally can’t imagine how cool that had to be for someone that once called Patton “one of the greatest vocalists of our generation.” And given how Patton-esque parts of Life Is But A Dream sounds, I’m sure the love of Patton and Mr. Bungle runs deep in A7X — after all, they did record their own cover of “Retrovertigo” back in 2017.
