A man takes his used Mercedes-Benz in for what he expects to be a routine oil change. Unfortunately, the mechanic finds several signs of past technician malpractice under the hood.

TikTok creator Cxllmedez (@cxllmedez) is a Toronto mechanic who posted the video about the situation on Jan. 24.

He starts the video by saying, “If you’re thinking about buying a 10+-year-old Mercedes-Benz, pay attention.”

Man Brings In 10-Year-Old Mercedes-Benz For Oil Change

The TikToker explains, “This vehicle right here came in for just an oil change. Upon putting it in the air, you can see… we just have a complete mess.”

The Mercedes is clearly leaking oil.

“As you can see, someone took it upon themselves to apply [what] looks like shower caulk on this oil pan,” Cxllmedez says. “Now, this oil pan has a plastic seal. No sealant needs to be applied.”

That’s not the only issue Cxllmedez found with the Mercedes; the customer said he recently purchased it used.

“We had an aftermarket drain plug, which this does have a rubber seal on it,” he says. “It was the incorrect size, so we were leaking oil from there as well.”

Not only that, but he says there were also incorrect bolts and washers throughout the system, causing additional leaks.

“We also went ahead and resealed these upper cam covers. As you can see, they do look a lot cleaner now,” he adds.

To conclude the video, Cxllmedez offers a bit of advice for car owners.

“The main thing with this is: be careful where you take your vehicle to get worked on,” he says. “If you’re not going to take it to the dealership, take it to somewhere that is trusted.”

Viewers React To The 10-Year-Old Mercedes With Major Oil Leak

In the comments section, viewers reacted to the situation the Mercedes owner found himself in, the state of the brand, and the best way to get one of its models serviced.

“The problem isn’t the car,” said one viewer. “The problem is people buying cars they can’t afford so they ignore the regular maintenance and service.”

“A plastic oil pan is crazy,” said a second viewer. “Mercedes has fallen off if you ask me.”

“I have a 2003 Mercedes-Benz with over 300K miles now and still runs great, but best believe the maintenance is done every time, and I have paperwork to show for it,” a third person said. “Mercedes are great if you do the maintenance constantly.”

Another person argued, “If the vehicle would have been serviced by a reputable mechanic, then it wouldn’t have these issues.”

Is It Smart to Buy a 10-Year-Old Luxury Vehicle?

It can be a good idea to buy a 10-year-old luxury vehicle, but it really depends on a combination of factors, including value, mileage, and maintenance and accident history. Car buyers really have to shop around, get used vehicles inspected by a third-party inspector, and use their own best judgment to get a good deal.

Some drivers might be attracted to the look, feel, and drivability of older luxury vehicles. However, CarMax points out that those vehicles also come with serious drawbacks, including expiring warranty coverage, higher maintenance costs, and outdated electronics. Essentially, your mileage may vary.
