WASHINGTON, D.C. — About 148,000 bottles of a popular dietary supplement sold nationwide online are being recalled after federal safety officials said the packaging fails to meet child-resistant standards, creating a poisoning risk for young children.
The recall covers Ultimate Multivitamin+ bottles sold by Mindbodygreen, according to a notice issued Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The supplements contain iron, an ingredient that must be secured in child-resistant containers under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act because accidental ingestion can cause serious injury or death. Regulators said the current packaging does not provide that protection.
The recalled bottles were sold online through the company’s website from November 2021 through November last year, typically priced between $40 and $70 depending on subscription plans. The product currently being sold is safe and unaffected.
Officials estimated roughly 148,370 bottles are affected. The vitamins were packaged in eight-ounce amber glass bottles with black caps and contain 60 capsules each.
Consumers are urged to immediately place the bottles out of sight and reach of children and contact the company for a free replacement cap designed to be child resistant. Once secured with the updated closure, customers may continue using the supplements as directed, CPSC said.
No injuries or incidents have been reported in connection with the packaging issue. Still, safety experts noted that iron supplements can be especially dangerous to young children if swallowed, which is why strict packaging rules apply to products containing the mineral.
Customers can request replacements by emailing multi@mindbodygreen.com or visiting the company’s website.
