The Boston Red Sox are in the middle of completing their 2026 MLB roster, and while the pitching staff and outfield are set, the infield is still missing one spot.
Alex Bregman’s departure has left a huge void in the infield, and they need to find just one more impact player for that final spot, either at third or second base. They agreed to terms with Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a one-year deal, but they aren’t done adding to the infield.
According to Chris Cotillo of Masslive.com, the Red Sox are making another addition to the infield. Just like IKF, this infielder is a veteran with a Gold Glove. Brendan Rodgers, the former Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros veteran, is coming to Boston.
Red Sox to sign another Gold Glove infielder after IKF deal
“Sources: Red Sox have signed veteran infielder Brendan Rodgers to a minor league contract,” Cotillo reports.
While this isn’t a Major League contract, Rodgers will join the team in Spring Training and compete for a job on the 26-man Opening Day roster.
The 29-year-old has been an impact player in the Major Leagues in his seven years in the league. He spent the first six years with the Rockies, putting up 5.9 bWAR in that time.
The bulk of that production came in 2022, when Rodgers put up 4.3 bWAR thanks to a .266 batting average and .733 OPS in 137 games. That was the year he won his Gold Glove award, as he was one of the best defenders in the sport.

Rodgers would fit into the Red Sox lineup as a second baseman, with Marcelo Mayer sticking at third base. While Rodgers might not be the best hitter, with a career OPS+ of just 88. But his strong defense makes him an interesting option.
He’s a cheaper version of Kiner-Falefa, and while he might not make the big leagues right away, he could be a nice stash option all year if the Red Sox need an injury replacement.
His .544 OPS in 43 games last season for the Astros was not great, and is cause for concern. But thanks to his great defense, the Red Sox are taking a chance on Rodgers as a depth option for their infield this upcoming season.
