Sir, – Instead of following what the data and science clearly show works to make cycling safer: lower speed limits, safe and fully segregated active travel infrastructure and fewer cars, the Government appears determined to pursue deflection, distraction and victim blaming, highlighted by renewed calls and proposals from the Government to mandate helmet and hi-vis use for people cycling.
While I, as a healthcare worker, support tighter regulation and proper enforcement around e-scooters, the Government’s overall approach to cycling safety is fundamentally flawed.
We should be designing environments where a 10-year-old can cycle safely to and from school, wearing whatever they want, not forcing people to dress like construction workers if they want to cycle, while drivers speed past with little or no consequence. – Yours etc.
