The Miami Marlins are firing up the time machine and bringing elements of their original identity package from the 1990s into the 21st century with a new Sunday alternate jersey.

The jersey was unveiled on Saturday, February 7, during the team’s FanFest at LoanDepot Park. It will be worn for Sunday home games through the 2026 Major League Baseball regular season, starting with the finale of their opening weekend series against their 1993 expansion brethren, the Colorado Rockies, on March 29.

The jersey is solid teal — a colour the team haven’t worn since they moved to LoanDepot Park and changed their name from the Florida Marlins to the Miami Marlins in 2012 — with an old-school black “MARLINS” wordmark with silver and white outlines across the chest.

The sleeves are trimmed with black, white and teal stripes. One sleeve will have a patch with the Marlins’ original primary logo — including “FLORIDA” in the top half of the roundel — while the other will have the logo of sponsor ADT.

Numbers on the back are set in a black block font with silver and white outlines, while names are black with white outlines. They’ll be paired with white pants with teal pinstripes.

The caps that go with the jersey are a replica of the caps the Marlins wore both at home and on the road from 1996 to 2011. The crown is all black, including the brim and the squatchee, and the logo on the front features a marlin curling around an F.

Marlins chief brand officer Alex Parker said on the team’s website that the appetite for teal jerseys came through loud and clear in fan surveys conducted when he joined the organization in July 2025.

“It really is that bridge between the generations, and I think for us, it’ll be a really good sign to the fans that we’re celebrating the Marlins as a whole,” Parker said. “We know this. We’re the Miami Marlins. This is our brand, and we’re excited, proud and couldn’t be more excited for the future. But that teal definitely means a lot to people.”

In their announcement, the Marlins didn’t specify if this new jersey is an addition to their closet or if it will take the place of one of their alternate jerseys from 2025.

While the teal jersey scratches the nostalgia itch for millennial baseball fans, it’s worth noting that the Marlins never actually wore a solid teal jersey in a regular season game prior to their first rebrand. Similar jerseys were used for batting practice and in spring training.

The Marlins first officially hinted at the jersey in a social media post on January 12, which showed cubbies with their usual primary cap and one with their “305” City Connect cap, before cutting to a third that was empty save for a note card reading “SUNDAY ALT.” Clicking the link in the post took users to a website with a teal background and the clock from the “Teal Monster” at Joe Robbie Stadium (now Hard Rock Stadium), where the Marlins played from 1993 to 2011.

However, eagle-eyed fans got a sneak peek at the uniform a couple of weeks earlier when it appeared very briefly in an Instagram video leading up to the National Hockey League’s Winter Classic, which was held in at LoanDepot Park in Miami this year. That video featured a rollerblading hockey player wearing the jersey.

The jersey design was further confirmed when it appeared in a trailer for MLB The Show 26 earlier this week.

The Marlins last threw it back to their first identity in 2023, when they wore white jerseys with teal pinstripes and a teal “MARLINS” wordmark for Friday home games to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Those jerseys also came with all-teal caps.

Miami joins the Milwaukee Brewers, the Athletics and the Minnesota Twins as MLB teams to officially unveil new jerseys for the 2026 season. The Detroit Tigers are also rumored to be adding an orange alternate jersey after it too was spotted in the trailer for MLB The Show 26. The Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs have also unveiled anniversary patches for the season.
