SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Villanova University women’s tennis team earned a hard-fought 4–3 BIG EAST victory over Seton Hall on Saturday, February 7.
Seton Hall claimed the doubles point to open the match, winning two of the three courts. Villanova secured a victory at No. 1 doubles, where the duo of Callahan and Gehrig cruised to a 6–2 win, but the Pirates captured the remaining two matches as the teams of Cocoran/Stevens and Gondorova/Monti were defeated.
The Wildcats responded strongly in singles play, winning four matches to secure the team victory. Senior Maggie Gehrig picked up a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, 6–1, 6–4, while junior Jenna Stevens followed with a 6–4, 6–2 triumph on court No. 4. Junior Lauren Monti kept the momentum going with a 6–2, 6–2 victory, and sophomore Alina Kornyeva delivered a dominant performance at No. 6 singles, dropping just one game in a 6–1, 6–0 win.
Villanova’s lone singles loss came on court No. 3, where Miriam Gondorova retired after taking the opening set.
With the win, Villanova improves to 2–4 overall and 1–0 in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats continue their road trip on Sunday, February 8, when they face Lehigh at 11:00 a.m.
