FWICE announces non-cooperation with the makers of Netflix’s Ghooskhor Pandat
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has taken a strong stand against the project. Its vice-president publicly stated that the federation will extend no cooperation to the makers of Ghooskhor Pandat unless the issue is resolved satisfactorily.
Speaking to ANI, Tiwari said, “I have a serious objection to the use of the word ‘Pandat’ in this title. No matter whose surname it is, we make films for the entertainment of the people. I strongly oppose producers and directors who insult any community. Such people have no right to make films. Those who play with the sentiments of people, whether they are producers, Netflix, or any other platform that streams such films, should be banned, and action should be taken against them.”
FWICE’s move significantly raises the stakes, as the organisation represents thousands of technicians and workers across India’s film and television industry. A non-cooperation call can practically stall promotional and production-related activities, putting further pressure on the makers and the streaming platform.
Why did the controversy start?
The
backlash erupted over the film’s title, Ghooskhor Pandat, which many have argued unfairly links a religious surname with corruption and bribery. The term “Pandat” or Pandit is traditionally associated with the Brahmin community, and several groups alleged that the title and promotional material risk creating communal stereotypes. The controversy erupted right after the title was revealed when
Netflix announced its 2026 slate.

A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film’s release, arguing that the title and narrative amount to “collective defamation” and could disturb communal harmony. The plea claims the film deliberately associates a religious identity with criminal behaviour, which may lead to social discord.
What has happened legally so far?
Following the petition, the controversy escalated into a legal battle, with court proceedings now underway. Industry sources indicate that Netflix is reassessing the release strategy of the film until legal clarity emerges, while multiple hearings are expected to determine whether the title or content requires modification.
The matter has drawn significant attention across trade circles, with concerns growing that the case could set a precedent for future content regulation involving religious or community identities.
What have the makers of Ghooskhor Pandat said?
Director Neeraj Pandey has addressed the issue and maintained that Ghooskhor Pandat is a fictional story and does not target or malign any religious community. They have stressed that the narrative focuses on individual corruption and systemic failure rather than religious identity.

He wrote on Instagram, “Our film is a fictional police drama, and the word ‘Pandat’ has been used in it only as a colloquial name for a fictional character. The focus of this story is on an individual’s work and his decisions. It has no connection with any caste, religion, or community, nor does it represent anyone.”
The makers argue that the film’s intention is to spotlight moral conflict and ethical compromise within a dramatic framework and not to provoke communal sentiment.
What’s next for Ghooskhor Pandat?
With legal proceedings underway, industry resistance intensifying, and Netflix reportedly reconsidering the release timeline, the future of Ghooskhor Pandat currently hangs in balance. The case is being closely watched, not just for its outcome, but for the broader implications it could have on creative freedom, content regulation, and sensitivity surrounding religious representation in Indian cinema.
