A former Vancouver Canucks forward and highly touted college prospect has decided to leave North America for the next couple of years after over 600 games in the NHL.

Over the coming weeks, we’re likely going to see more free agents head to Europe if they’re unable to land either a guaranteed NHL contract or a professional tryout (PTO) and it looks like another former Canuck is making the trip for the Atlantic for at least the next two years.

After nine seasons and over 600 games in the National Hockey League, former Vancouver Canucks forward Jimmy Vesey’s time in North America has come to a close, for now.

On Monday afternoon, Geneve-Servette HC, who play in Switzerland’s top division – National League, announced that they’ve agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Jimmy Vesey.

“We are very pleased with Jimmy’s arrival. Thanks to his excellent hockey IQ and his very reliable two-way game, he can be used in all situations and at key moments. In addition, with his immense experience, he will be an important leader in the locker room. We expect him to regain his offensive performance in our league, with his passing skills, his direct and powerful game.” Geneve-Servette HC Sports Director Marc Gautschi said.

Vesey, 32, was a third round pick of the Nashville Predators during the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, but never signed with the club, who traded his rights to the Buffalo Sabres in June 2016.

Later that same summer, Vesey became the top college free agent and signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the New York Rangers, going on to spend the first three seasons of his NHL career in The Big Apple.

“I’m thrilled to be coming to Geneva and starting a new chapter in my career. I’ve heard nothing but praise, not only about Switzerland, but also about the city and the organization. It’s great to be part of such a strong team, and I’m excited to see what we can achieve this season and beyond. Our goal is to get back to the top of the league, and I can’t wait to get started.” Vesey said.

Vesey, a native of Boston, Massachusetts, could make his Geneve-Servette debut as early as Friday as the club opens their preseason slate against fellow Swiss club, HC Fribourg-Gotteron.
