New Book to Chronicle Stories of Newfoundlanders in Alberta

A Newfoundlander living in Alberta is compiling the stories of people who have moved away from home in a new book.

Lisa Barnett, who moved to Alberta over 30 years ago, is an administrator on the Facebook group “Edmonton Newfies.”

She started the group 10 years ago as a way for Newfoundlanders in that province to connect and promote local businesses – and in that time it has grown to have 28,000 members.

To celebrate a decade of connections, Barnett is putting together a book of stories of people who have made the move from NL to Alberta.

She says each person will get one page to tell their story, and include photos of friends, family, or their hometown.

Barnett says a lot of the stories follow the same path in that they moved for work or better money, but does recall one couple who experienced a “push and pull” when making the move.

She says the couple’s children made the move to Alberta so they quickly followed suit. However, they hated living in the prairie province and moved back home. That lasted for a few years, but they missed their kids too much and moved back to Alberta once again.
