Local boxing gym helps people with Parkinson’s fight back

  • February 9, 2026

BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) – It might sound surprising, but one local gym is proving that punches can pack a powerful health benefit.

Punches, jabs, and crosses—it might look like a typical boxing workout, but at Rude Dog Boxing, fighters are taking on more than just an opponent. They’re battling Parkinson’s disease.

Owner Paul Iannuzzi started the program after watching his own mother struggle with the condition.

“I was unhappy with the way things were being handled with her—a lot of medication—and I figured, you know, let me try something different and see if I can help,” said Iannuzzi.

That “something different” turned into years of research. Iannuzzi connected with neurologists and medical experts before launching the class nearly a decade ago.

Today, the gym offers specialized boxing workouts designed to help with balance, coordination, and other symptoms often impacted by Parkinson’s disease.

For Jo Ann Miller, the impact has been life-changing.

“I’m stable and I’m happy. I have lost all that insecurity,” Miller added.

She says that when she was diagnosed just over 3 years ago, it was a shock.

“I was devastated. I couldn’t tell anybody,” said Miller.

Now, she feels stronger and more confident.

It’s not just about throwing punches. Participants also work on memory drills, footwork, and stability exercises.

“Be confident in yourself, believe in yourself, listen to your body, and don’t stop what you’re doing,” said Robert Gau, a participant.

“Come here for help. Don’t be shy. You know you’re not the only one,” added Craig Kahil, another participant.

Rude Dog Boxing now runs Parkinson’s disease programs at four locations, proving that sometimes fighting back starts one punch at a time.
