Potential 8 games in 16 days kicks off Assiniboia Sr. Rebels league and provincial playoff schedules

ASSINIBOIA — Assiniboia Sr. Rebels could play eight games in 16 days to kick off February as they begin their quests for both a league and a provincial title.

Opening game for the Sr. Rebels was lost in overtime, playing Yellowgrass Wheat Kings.

Sean Whelan opened scoring for the Rebels with the Wheat Kings quickly answering with a goal of their own. However, Assiniboia ended the first period going up a goal after Dakota Helland hit the back of the net with only 18 seconds left on the clock.

The Wheat Kings’ Ryker Wyatt scored two more in the second, answered only by a single goal by Travis Marit. This tied the game 3-3 after two complete periods.

It took until the 5:59 mark of the third period when Braydon Delorme rocked the goal light and it looked like Assiniboia might have the game, however the last 30 seconds of the third tied the game yet again with another Wheat Kings goal, forcing overtime.

Walker Watson from Yellowgrass got the game winner at the 8:37 mark leaving Assiniboia to regroup for the game two of the best of five league quarterfinal series.

Teams in the Notekeu League playoffs include Radville playing Milestone, Gravelbourg playing Coronach and Lafleche playing Avonlea. Feb. 6 results also showed Avonlea defeating Lafleche 6-1, and Milestone defeating Radville 5-1 in their opening, best of five playoff game series.

Taking on Yellow Grass in round one of league playoffs, Assiniboia hosted the opening game on Feb. 6. Game two will take place in Yellow Grass on Feb. 7. Game three is set for Assiniboia on Feb. 15 and a return to Yellow Grass for game four, if needed, is set for Feb. 16. If a game five is required, it will take place in Assiniboia on Feb. 18.

Should Assiniboia win out of quarter finals the semi-final series, also best of five, will follow with dates to be announced.

The Hockey Sask., Senior C Division South Semi Final will be a best of three series beginning in Shaunavon on Feb. 14. Game two of this provincial series will take place at Southland Co-op Centre on Feb. 21 and if a game three is needed, it will be back in Shaunavon on Feb. 22.
