The United States women’s hockey team turned the most storied rivalry in sports into a one-sided masterclass, dismantling Canada 5-0 to clinch the top seed in Group A.

With Canada playing without injured captain Marie-Philip Poulin, the U.S. took full advantage, relentless in a transition game that looked leagues ahead of the defending gold medalists. The stars and stripes scored twice in the first and second period while holding Canada scoreless for the first time in it’s Olympic history.

The afternoon belonged to a new generation of American stars, specifically Hannah Bilka and Abbey Murphy, who spearheaded the utter domination of the Canadian backline. Bilka’s two-goal performance was a highlight reel in itself, but the statistical story of the game was the four-point outburst from Caroline Harvey, whose vision from the blue line kept Canada in a constant state of retreat.

This triple threat of youth, alongside a historic assist from Hilary Knight — which tied the all-time U.S. Olympic points record — left the Canadians reeling with no answer for the American onslaught. The exclamation point came in the final frame when Laila Edwards sniped a shot into the top corner, marking her first career Olympic goal and pushing the lead to a staggering five.

By the time the final horn sounded, the U.S. had not only secured a crucial shutout but also the top spot in the knockout bracket. With this victory, the Americans head into the quarterfinals having outscored their opponents 20-1, looking every bit like a team destined to reclaim the top of the podium.

The Sporting News followed all the action in the storied rivalry where the United States were once again dominant. Check out all the highlights below.

3:15 p.m. GOAL: 20 seconds into the power play, a scramble up front is covered up by Desbiens. But, it goes to review, and it’s a goal credited to Kirsten Simms, her first ever Olympic goal.

It’s determined that the puck fully crossed the net before the whistle blew, and the United States take a big lead. Moreover, Canada challenges; it’s unsuccessful and there is a minor penalty.

The United States are 1-for-2 on the power play and lead 3-0. Because of the challenge, they’re back on the man advantage.

It sends the United States to the power play 58 seconds into the second.

3:04 p.m.: The second period is underway.
