Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a missing person case after a man’s vehicle was found aboard a BC Ferries vessel at the Tsawwassen terminal late Monday night.

Police say the man left his home on Monday, Feb. 9 and did not return. After he was reported missing, officers checked several locations he was known to frequent and asked partner agencies to be on the lookout for his vehicle.

Later that night, RCMP say the man’s vehicle was found on a ferry at the Tsawwassen terminal.

“A review of onboard video showed a person matching the missing individual’s description entering the water while the vessel was underway,” Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and RCMP West Coast Marine Service, launched a search of the surrounding area immediately but have not yet located the missing man.

Nanaimo RCMP is leading the investigation and coordinating with BC Ferries, Delta Police, Gabriola Island RCMP, the JRCC and RCMP marine service. Investigators say the man’s family has been notified and the search remains ongoing. No further details are being released at this time, police said.

BC Ferries said in a service notice issued early Tuesday morning that a “police incident” delayed the 10:45 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo’s Duke Point. BC Ferries said the vessel departed more than two hours behind schedule after the incident was resolved, apologizing to travellers for the disruption.

Police confirmed the delay was related to the missing person investigation.

Anyone with information on the man’s disappearance is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP.
