LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine men’s golf coach Bruce Brown has been promoted to director of golf at the university, athletic director Scott Wiegandt announced today.
Under his new title, Brown will take over the head coaching duties of the women’s golf team, in addition to leading the men’s team, following the retirement of former coach Art Henry.
“I am excited to see the next era of golf at Bellarmine take shape,” said Wiegandt. “Bruce is familiar with a role like this and his ability to maximize what those have done before him in both programs will shine through as this plays out. I believe Bruce will lead both programs on a positive trajectory into the future.”
During Brown’s tenure, the Knights’ men’s team has three times surpassed the previous best team round record of 280. His group also set the program record for fewest strokes in a 54-hole tournament by posting a total of 845 at the 2023 Colonel Shootout in Richmond.
“It’s a very exciting time for the Bellarmine women’s golf program,” said Brown. “Art has done an incredible job getting through the transition from Division II to Division I. Now we will begin to strengthen the schedule and increase our roster, thus preparing us for the ASUN conference. I am confident we can provide an atmosphere that will allow us to be successful.”
Brown has guided four players to top-five finishes and during the 2022-23 season helped Luke Bischoff to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Additionally, two players, Jensen Klondike (2018-2023) and Ben Wulkopf (2023-present), have earned spots on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Brown was named Bellarmine University’s men’s golf head coach before the 2022-23 season.
A graduate of St. Xavier High School, Brown is a long-time PGA professional with impressive accolades as both a collegiate coach and teaching professional. He also played collegiate golf at Bellarmine in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Brown began his career in golf as an assistant professional at Frankfort Country Club in 1982 and has been a Kentucky Section PGA Pro ever since. After two years at Frankfort, he served two years at Dix Country Club before helping develop and serve as head professional at Old Bridge Country Club from 1989 to 2010. While at Old Bridge, he served as Centre College’s director of golf and swing coach from 2000 to 2016. During his tenure with the Colonels, Brown coached both men and women and was named the National Golf Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year in 2011-12. He was also named the Southern Athletic Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2013. Following the 2016 season, Brown returned to Frankfort Country Club as head professional, where he remained until 2022.
Brown’s teaching resume reflects several impressive honors as well. He was named the PGA Kentucky Section’s Teacher of the Year in 2004 and was twice recognized by Golf Magazine as one of America’s top 100 teachers.
