3 big moments from Day 5 of Olympic competition
Figure skating: Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier earned their first Olympic medal, and the fourth for Canada these Games, with a bronze in ice dance after scoring 217.74.
Former Canadian Olympian Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron won gold for France with a score of 225.82. Madison Chock and Evan Bates earned silver for the United States with a score of 224.39.Â
Speed skating: There was some drama in the oval today after a collision on the ice between China’s Lian Ziwen and Dutch skater Joep Wennemars during the men’s 1,000-metre speed skate final. The crash led to Ziwen being disqualified while Wennemars was given a do-over, though he didn’t beat his original time in the re-race.Â
Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil came in eighth in the event, with American Jordan Stolz capturing gold and setting an Olympic record.
Women’s luge doubles debut: Calgarians Beattie Podulsky and Kailey Allan made history today as the first Canadian women to compete in doubles luge at a Winter Olympics, a new event for this year’s Games. The sport was introduced at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics for men, but women haven’t been able to compete until this year.Â
Correction: A previous version of this post stated Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier earned a score of 131.56 in ice dance. In fact, the score of 131.56 was only for the free dance portion of the event.
