A man with a Kells address who sold prescribed medicine without having a licence appeared before Navan District Court in a prosecution initiated by the Health Service Executive.

Francis Cussen, Moynalty Road, Kells was charged with the sale of medical products without authorisation to do so. The Health Products Regulatory Authority was involved in the prosecution.

He pleaded guilty to four offences. The court was told that the authority got a tip-off in January 2024 concerning an Instagram account.

Investigations were conducted and through a telephone number the investigators were able to identify a Revolut account and trace the defendant from that. The drug involved was a prescription-only medicine and the defendant was not a pharmacist.

A prosecuting lawyer said that a search warrant was obtained and the defendant’s property was searched. Twenty two vials of the drug were found and on 13th August last year the defendant was interviewed under caution and he made full admissions in front of his solicitor.

The vials were valued at €2,860 (€130 per vial).

Defending solicitor Stephen Murphy handed a letter written by defendant to Judge Eirinn McKiernan setting out his personal circumstances. The solicitor said his client was in court to “hold up his hands to the offences”. He had given full admission voluntarily.

The judge said that she understood the defendant had difficult circumstances. If he paid the €1,500 costs of the case along with a donation of €200 to Meath Drug and Alcohol Response she would strike out the charges on 24th April next, the judge said.
