Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Samuel Emilus isn’t shy when it comes to public displays of affection.

For example, he hugged an official when Tommy Nield caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the West Final.

“That was definitely me—a couple of things. Emotion and tension were high. When Tommy finally scored the game-winning touchdown, as I’m making my way over there to celebrate with Tommy and give him a hug, I’m kind of tired, one. And two, the ref is in my way, and I’m like, might as well just hug him instead of hugging Tommy, who was 20 yards down the field from me. So that’s really what happened. It was nothing malicious. But I guess it was a funny moment. And yeah, I remember this forever.”

The 28-year-old Emilus admits he is a hugger.

“Yes, that’s a natural thing. Me and Yoshi started that thing this year. But Yoshi, he’s taking it way too far. He’s going to be jumping on you like he’s 6-foot-7, 350 pounds.”

Emilus, who is known for his physical play away from the ball, may not be the first candidate for a hug.

“It’s funny you said this. Coach texted me this morning and showed Kian Schaffer-Baker and me a clip of players blocking downfield. And he was just telling Schaffer and me that’s really what he loved the most about us. That’s in my DNA. I like seeing my teammates’ success more than I see mine. And if he means blocking downfield for them so they can get more yards, it’s just what it is.”
