MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 8 Auburn women’s golf is in second place after the opening round of the Moon Golf Invitational on Sunday at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Florida. The Tigers carded a 4-over 292 and were led by Molly Brown Davidson’s 70 (-2).

“Very windy conditions out there today,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “There is so much thinking, calculating and problem solving to do when the winds are high. I think we let some shots slip toward the end due to some mental errors. We can expect more challenges tomorrow and we just have to keep our heads in it until the last putt is holed.

“Moving day tomorrow. We are seven shots behind the leader, but in team golf that can be erased quickly.”

Davidson made the turn at 1-over on Sunday, then recorded three birdies on the back nine at Suntree Country Club to card a 2-under 70. The round marks the fifth round under par for the Auburn sophomore this season and places her in a tie for second individually, just one stroke behind leader Izzy Pellot of Mississippi State.

“Molly was a mental giant today, as she was so patient, accepting and trusting,” continued Luellen. “Those were words she used prior to the start of the day and she was that girl today.”

As a team, Auburn is seven strokes back of tournament leader No. 6 Texas A&M and one stroke clear of three teams tied for third place: No. 5 Florida, No. 7 Wake Forest, and No. 9 Texas.

Anna Davis bounced back after back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6 with consistent play the rest of the round. She carded a 1-over 73 and is tied for 16th place on the individual leaderboard. Katie Cranston finished one stroke behind her teammate with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 29th place.

Redshirt senior Carys Worby provided the final counting score for the Tigers with a 3-over 75, which places her in 40th place.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Anne Fernandez picked up three birdies in her 1-over 73 and is tied for 16th place with Davis.
