O’Donnell, 63, told Cuomo on Friday that she came back “to hold my children again” and that one of her adult sons is expecting his first child soon, “so I’m very excited.”

The former host of her own talk show and The View said in a video last spring that her “feud” with President Donald Trump and the changes made by his administration were a big reason for her leaving.

“I don’t regret leaving at all. I think I did what I needed to do to save myself, my child and my sanity,” she told Cuomo.

“I was recently went home for two weeks and I did not really tell anyone. I just went to see my family. I wanted to see how hard it would be for me to get in and out of the country. I wanted to feel what it felt like.”

Still, much of O’Donnell’s family still lives in the U.S.

“I hadn’t been home in over a year,” the mother of five told Cuomo. “I also wanted to make sure that it was safe for me before I brought my daughter this summer, where we plan to spend the summertime off from her schooling here with my family.”

Returning felt ‘very different’

O’ Donnell said the last two weeks they spent in New York felt “like a very different country.”

“(It’s) a very different place for me because, for a year, I haven’t been watching the news. I haven’t been watching American culture television. I’ve been in a place where celebrity worship does not exist. I don’t regret leaving at all. I think I did what I needed to do to save myself, my child and my sanity.”

She added: “The energy that I felt while in the United States … it was scary. There’s a feeling that something is really wrong and no one is doing anything about it.”

Meanwhile, Trump, 79, wrote on social media last July that he was “giving serious consideration” to revoking her U.S. citizenship.

“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,” he said. “She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

O’Donnell responded on Instagram: “The president of the USA has always hated the fact that I see him for who he is — a criminal con man sexual abusing liar out to harm our nation to serve himself. This is why I moved to Ireland.”
