Edmonton police are investigating the death of a man who was found injured at the scene of a shooting on the city’s north side on Monday afternoon.

Police said officers were called to the area of 109th Street and 166th Avenue at about 1:45 p.m. after someone reported a shooting in the area.

Police said an injured man was found at the scene by officers and paramedics. He was taken to hospital where he was later declared dead. They said an autopsy has been scheduled for later this week.

Police declined to say if the man was found in a building, a vehicle or outside.

“It is still early in the investigation, and no further information is available at this time,” police said in a news release issued Monday night.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday, police had issued a news release to advise that Castle Downs Road had been closed between 100th Street and 112th Street because of “police activity.”

A CBC News crew saw at least five police vehicles at the scene late Monday afternoon. Police had taped off a large area of the street and evidence markers could be seen on the road. An SUV with its doors open was also spotted in the area investigators were focused on but police did not confirm how or if it related to their investigation.

Police said investigators are hoping that anyone with dashcam or home security video who was in the area between 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Monday will contact them.
