A day of light snow in Edmonton will transform into heavy snowfall Monday night into Tuesday.

Environment Canada, which issued a yellow snowfall warning for many parts of central and northern Alberta, is forecasting 15 to 25 centimetres of snow.

Local amounts could exceed 30 cm, the weather authority warns.

The snow is expected to subside by Tuesday night.

“Travel will likely be challenging,” the Environment Canada alert reads. “There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Allow extra time for travel.”

Meanwhile mild temperatures will give way to a period of intense cold this week, prompting the City of Edmonton to activate its extreme weather response.

The response began Monday at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to last until Feb. 27 at 9 a.m.

Consistent lows of minus-23 Celsius are expected for the week, with temperatures dropping to minus-27 C on Wednesday night.

During the response, open city facilities like libraries and recreation centres will be available for anyone who needs a respite from the cold during regular operation periods.

The Al Rashid Mosque will not provide additional shelter spaces in observance of Ramadan.
