‘Golden’ couple in cottage comedy-drama on Surrey stage starting Feb. 25

Surrey is a winter tour stop for The Golden Anniversaries, a play that promises “witty, romantic and deeply relatable comedy-drama” from Arts Club Theatre Company.
From Feb. 25 to March 7, Mark Crawford’s story of aging couple Glen and Sandy Golden will be told at the 400-seat Main Stage theatre at Surrey Arts Centre, on a 12-city tour of B.C.
In “a humorous and moving portrait of long-term love,” actors Peter Anderson and Eileen Barrett play two people who’ve celebrated every wedding anniversary by coming to the same cottage for a romantic getaway.
The weekend marks 50 years of wedded bliss, more or less, though Sandy recently cancelled their big anniversary party and kicked Glen to the curb. Now, he wants to talk.
The Arthi Chandra-directed show sees the Goldens recount the good, bad and ugly of spending half a century together.
If the playwright’s name sounds familiar, he also wrote Bed and Breakfast and The Birds and the Bees plays produced by the Arts Club company in recent years.
“Mark Crawford captures the humour and emotional depth in everyday life with his sharp dialogue and witty writing,” raves Ashlie Corcoran, artistic director of the Vancouver-based ACTC.
“Audiences of all ages can connect with these characters and recognize themselves and those around them in this heartfelt exploration of love, aging and relationships.”
Tickets in Surrey range from $29 to $55, depending on zone in the theatre at Bear Creek Park, on purchase.surrey.ca or call 604-501-5580.
Special shows during the run include a Paint the Play matinee Feb. 28 (“drop off your 6-11-year-old child for an art camp while you enjoy the show”), a post-show chat with the actors (March 5) and Vocal-Eye audio description for patrons who are blind or partially sighted (March 7, 4 p.m.).
The Golden Anniversaries is last in the Arts Club’s three-show “On Tour” series for 2026-26. First of the all-Canadian plays was the Métis love story You used to call me Marie… (staged in October), followed by Mieko Ouchi’s road-trip comedy Burning Mom (January dates), staged in partnership with Surrey Civic Theatres.
