Why “buffet”?

A leading GTA meteorologist explained that the storm arriving tomorrow morning will bring a mix of weather conditions, including snow, rain, and potential flooding in some areas of Toronto. Newmarket and Richmond Hill could see up to 15 cm of snow, with even heavier snowfall expected in Barrie.

Environment Canada warns that the city and the surrounding Greater Toronto Area (GTA) may experience snow and ice pellets accumulating to five centimeters, along with several hours of freezing temperatures, which could lead to ice buildup of a few millimeters.

“Near-zero visibility in fog is expected in some areas,” Environment Canada stated. “Visibility may decrease suddenly at times.”

A winter storm yellow warning is now in effect for Toronto. Residents are advised that this mix of conditions could make roadways hazardous early Wednesday morning.

“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Prepare for rapidly changing and deteriorating travel conditions and allow extra time for your journey,” Environment Canada advised in their warning.

The national weather agency notes that areas west of Toronto will primarily experience freezing rain.

Other parts of southern Ontario, including the City of Hamilton, are under an orange freezing rain warning, with up to 5 to 10 millimeters of ice accumulation possible.
