Bob Melvin is back with the Athletics.
The team announced the return of their former manager as a special assistant, baseball operations, on Thursday.
Melvin, 64, spent 11 seasons as the A’s skipper from 2011 to 2021. He led the team to three American League West titles and six playoff appearances over his tenure. He was named AL Manager of the Year on two occasions with the team.
A native of Palo Alto, CA, Melvin most recently managed the San Francisco Giants in 2024 and 2025, dismissed last fall after a third-place finish in the National League West.
Having also managed the Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres, Melvin has an all-time record of 1,678-1,588 (.514) across 22 seasons. He is 20th all-time in managerial victories.
A catcher as a player, Melvin appeared in 692 big league games over 10 seasons from 1985 to 1994 with the Detroit Tigers, Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
