An HBO Original that “explores the love, loss, and struggles that fuel his songwriting,” the documentary’s trailer shows images of Joel as a child and throughout his career, including video footage of him with his band, sitting and writing music at the piano, and clips from the songwriter’s massive tours over the years.

“Sometimes it’s alien to me, this guy Billy Joel,” the pop legend says in a clip for the new documentary, as his hit “Piano Man” plays over his voiceover. “I don’t know who that is, or what that is. I’m reminded of it when I go walk on the street, ‘Oh, right, I’m that guy.’” The trailer also includes interviews with iconic artists, including Paul McCartney, who says in the trailer, “When I first heard Billy, it was like, ‘Wait a minute, who’s this?’”

In July 2024, Joel concluded his Madison Square Garden residency after a decade of performing at the storied venue.

“We were the first group to play at Yankee Stadium [in 1990],” Joel said at the New York City show. “We were the last band to play at Shea Stadium [in 2008]. We played Berlin the night that the Berlin Wall came down [in 1990, so not quite]. We were the first American full-fledged performance in the Soviet Union [in 1987]. And we were the first band to play after Castro came to power, and we played Cuba [1979]. We played in front of the Coliseum in Rome for a half million people [in 2006]. And the food was great. But out of all of them, this is the best. There’s no place like this.”

Earlier this May, Joel canceled his tour due to a brain disorder diagnosis, known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (or NPH). “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” Joel said in a statement, “and thank you for understanding.”
