After being shut out in their tournament opener, the Sask Selects 14U squad looked to get back on track Friday morning against the Edmonton Elks Selects.

The Selects took command early in the first quarter with a long touchdown run from Regina’s Nicardo Reid. The missed convert kept the score at 6–0. To end the half, the Saskatchewan defence stood tall with a turnover on downs deep in their own end.

The offence stayed hot in the third quarter, as Saskatoon’s Powlowski hauled in a catch‑and‑run touchdown to extend the lead to 12–0. Edmonton responded immediately with a long, clock‑eating drive that resulted in a touchdown and a single, cutting the deficit to 12–7.

At the two‑minute warning, Powlowski made another big third‑down catch to move the chains, though the Selects were eventually forced to punt. Edmonton mounted one last drive, battling through multiple injuries, and attempted a final heave downfield as time expired. The pass was knocked down at triple zeros.

Malachy Mattie of Moose Jaw is a jack of all trades on the offensive line for the Selects says the team is feeling better in the heat.

“It was a lot nicer today, but I think since we played in the heat yesterday, we just adjusted better to it,” said Mattie as he enjoyed the victory against a national rival in Monterrey, Mexico

“It’s a huge honour to be here. You feel a sense of country pride.”

The Selects held on for a 12–7 win, improving to 1–1 in the SCORE! Bowl Series. Up next is a late‑afternoon matchup against the Monterrey Fuego on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
