In a Major League Soccer first, a Surrey radio station will broadcast Vancouver Whitecaps soccer games in Punjabi this season.
The team has partnered with Connect FM 91.5 for all 17 MLS regular-season home games.
Match coverage in Punjabi kicks off Saturday, Feb. 21 when the Whitecaps open the MLS season against Real Salt Lake at BC Place Stadium. Fans can tune in to Connect FM on 91.5 FM or 91.5 HD2, or stream on the company website and mobile app.
The broadcast team includes Pervez Sandhu, Jagraj Lalli and Shubham Arora, both of whom have experience with Hockey Night in Canada’s Punjabi edition. Lalli broadcasts Surrey Eagles junior hockey games in English.
Aditi Bhatt, Whitecaps FC chief commercial officer, said the team and station are “excited to break down language barriers to bring fans of the global game into our Whitecaps FC family, allowing them to enjoy matches in their native language.”
Tejinder Singh, director of strategy and operations for Connect Media Network, said the Comber Way-based broadcaster is proud to announce its partnership with Whitecaps FC.
Launched in 2020, “Connect FM will become the first-ever Punjabi radio presenter for Whitecaps FC games in MLS, marking a historic milestone in Canadian soccer broadcasting. Connect thanks Vancouver Whitecaps FC for their confidence in this collaboration and looks forward to a strong, long-term relationship that benefits fans across Metro Vancouver.”
Connect Media Network operates stations in Metro Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg.
