UPDATE: All eastbound express and collector lanes on Highway 401 in west Mississauga near Winston Churchill Boulevard have fully reopened following Friday morning’s fatal crash, police said just before 4:30 p.m. (Earlier story follows)

One person has died in what police say was a single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga early Friday morning.

A pickup truck crashed in the eastbound lanes of the highway, just past Winston Churchill Boulevard, around 6 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said on X.

The truck was in the collector lanes, hit a crash cushion or end treatment and ended up in the express lanes, Schmidt said.

The driver, a 35-year-old man, was taken from the pickup without vital signs, treated at the scene and then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, Schmidt added.

Police are working on notifying next-of-kin.

Traffic is getting by in the collector lanes, but there are heavy delays approaching Winston Churchill Boulevard, Schmidt said.

He added the express lanes were expected to be closed until around noon.

Just before 11 a.m., Schmidt said the on-scene collision investigation was complete, but repairs to the crash cushion were ongoing. The lanes were expected to re-open between noon and 1 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Schmidt added.

Initially, OPP said the crash involved multiple vehicles.

Any witnesses to this crash are asked to call the OPP at 905-858-8670.
