Island Health is continuing its journey into the digital age by rolling out email and text notifications for medical imaging appointments.

The change will start on Feb. 23 for the North and Central Island, then on March 3 for the South Island for patients enrolled in the MyHealth patient portal.

For those who aren’t enrolled in MyHealth, telephone notifications will continue, and if a patient can’t be reached by phone after three attempts, the request will return to their healthcare provider to follow up.

Patients who are enrolled will get a text message notifying them of an appointment, and patients who have opted in for email notification will also receive an email.

The notifications will include information about the hospital location and full address, type of exam (CT scan, ultrasound or MRI), date and time of the appointment, a link to confirm the appointment and view preparation instructions, and a phone number to call to cancel, reschedule or ask questions.

BC Cancer breast cancer screening appointments will continue to be sent by mail.

Island Health says this change will make it easier for patients to manage.

The health authority also reminds those who have opted into MyHealth to be mindful of scams, and that Island Health will never ask for passwords, banking details or payment information by text or email.
