Gavin McKenna, the projected first overall pick for this summer’s NHL Draft, put on a show Friday night.
During an 11-4 rout over Ohio State, the Penn State winger recorded eight points, including one goal and seven assists, to shatter the school’s single-game point record of five.
McKenna, an 18-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon, now has 12 goals and 29 assists over 27 games in 2025-26, his first year of NCAA hockey after departing the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers at the end of last season.
McKenna tallied 129 points (41 goals and 88 assists) in just 56 games with the Tigers in 2024-25, and led them to the WHL league title in his last season with the team.
McKenna has represented Canada at the past two World Junior Hockey Championships, scoring four goals and 10 assists over seven games at the most recent tournament earlier this year.
Canada won the bronze medal after finishing fifth in 2025.
McKenna was recently charged with aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, disorderly conduct, and harassment following an alleged physical altercation in January. However, the most severe charge – aggravated assault – was dropped a short time later.
