What to know

Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated Canada’s women’s team pursuit speed skaters in a video call after their second straight Olympic gold.

The team — Ivanie Blondin, Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann — showed off their medals during the heartfelt exchange shared Thursday.

Canada now has 16 medals at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, with more events still ahead this weekend.

A heartfelt video shows Prime Minister Mark Carney calling Team Canada’s women’s speed skating team to congratulate them on their gold medal win — and for capturing the hearts of Canadians.

Carney posted the clip on X Thursday, sharing a brief video call with team members Ivanie Blondin, Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann, who proudly showed off their medals.

“Félicitations,” Carney told the athletes in French, which translates to “Congratulations” in English.

The victory marks the team’s second consecutive Olympic gold in the women’s team pursuit.

“To win, obviously, is incredible — you know better than I,” Carney said. “But to repeat. To repeat! Unbelievable.”

The prime minister also joked about an award of his own, showing off a lawn bowling trophy from the Hamilton Italian Centre that he said he won earlier this year, and promised to take the team out to try the sport.

Before ending the call, Carney said he was proud to speak on behalf of Canadians.

“I’m spoiled in this role because I get to say, on behalf of all Canadians, how proud we are,” he said. “You guys nailed it!”

On Friday, Maltais earned her third medal of the Games — bronze in the 1,500-metres — adding to her team pursuit gold and bronze in the 3,000-metres. Maltais and Blondin are also set to compete Saturday in the women’s mass start semifinals.

Canada’s medal count now sits at 16: four gold, five silver and seven bronze.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games wrap Sunday, Feb. 22.
