LETTER: B.C.’s new property tax deferral rules are fair

Editor,
The new property tax deferral measures in the B.C. budget are welcome, as they correct a longstanding inequity.
Previously, the ability to defer property taxes was not income-tested, meaning some well-off seniors living in expensive homes were effectively subsidized by less fortunate taxpayers. In a time when children are learning in portable classrooms and there is insufficient long-term accommodation for our older citizens, such subsidies were hard to justify.
Tax deferment remains available, but now without the benefit of a subsidized low interest rate and without simple interest. In these challenging budget times, this is a fair and responsible policy change.
