Vancouver Canucks head coach Adam Foote met with reporters on Friday afternoon where he clarified their plans to name their next captain following recent reports.
After trading away Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild back in mid-December, the Vancouver Canucks were left without a captain, a situation they haven’t been in since Janauary to October of 2023 after Bo Horvat was dealt to the New York Islanders.
“I’ve been hearing he’s going to be the new captain. He’s a strong, strong candidate to be the new captain.” NHL insider & co-host of Donnie & Dhali Rick Dhaliwal said this week.

With Dhaliwal’s report at the back of everyone’s mind this week, Vancouver Canucks head coach Adam Foote was asked if the club was any closer to officially naming a captain and when they could do so.
Foote told reporters on Friday that while naming one this season isn’t technically ruled by himself and his coaching staff, it’ll likely get pushed to the 2026-27 campaign, whether that’ll be having one in place for training camp or in time for opening night in October.
“I asked Adam Foote today if there were any plans to name a captain for duration of #Canucks season and while he didn’t come right out and say ‘No’ he said it was something that would likely get pushed to next season.” Jeff Paterson of The Province said.
As things stand right now, the Vancouver Canucks are just one of three teams without a captain, joining the Boston Bruins, who haven’t had one in nearly a year after trading Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, as well as the San Jose Sharks, although they’re probably waiting a little bit before handing the ‘C’ to Macklin Celebrini.
While naming a captain certainly isn’t necessary, especially with the leaders the Vancouver Canucks have in their dressing room at the moment, it would be ideal to have one in place next season, as the club enters the next phase of their rebuild.
Whether it’s FIlip Hronek, Brock Boeser or even Conor Garland, if he’s still around, Adam Foote and his coaching staff have some great candidates to choose from, however the Czech blueliner is probably the favourite to land the ‘C’.
