PEORIA, Ariz. – One day after winning their spring training opener, the Seattle Mariners lost against the San Francisco Giants 10-5 at the Peoria Sports Complex. Seattle scored five runs in the first, but couldn’t hold on.
They are now 1-1 in the spring and here’s what you need to know:

1) For the second straight day, the Mariners offense looked good right out of the shoot. Victor Robles began the game with an infield single and then Cole Young walked. Patrick Wisdom singled in a run, eventually setting the stage for Miles Mastrobuoni to hit a first-inning grand slam, giving the Mariners a 5-0 lead at the time.
2) Speaking of Mastrobuoni, he’s in an interesting spot this spring. A versatile infielder who can also play the outfield, he does just about everything well. However, he does nothing absolutely spectacular. Dan Wilson spoke about his appreciation for Mastrobuoni before the game on Saturday, but it’s hard to see him making the team if everyone is healthy. He’s left-handed, just like Josh Naylor, Cole Young, JP Crawford and Brendan Donovan. He’s out of options. He went 2-for-2 with a homer and a double. He’ll play for Italy in the World Baseball Classic, leaving for the tournament in about a week. Dominic Canzone will also play for Italy.

3) Colt Emerson started at third for the second straight game and had a regrettable day at the plate, going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. He did have a nice play at third, throwing a runner out at home on the contact play.
4) On the pitching front: Emerson Hancock pitched excellent in the first, flashing mid-90s velocity and striking out two. However, he allowed a walk and hit a batter in the second, failing to get out of the inning. In total, he struck out four and allowed the walk, the hit-by-pitch and a single. He was charged with three earned runs, though those runs only scored because of a sun double after he exited.

5) Andres Munoz allowed consecutive doubles in the top of the third. His fastball hit 99 mph but was more consistently in the 97-98 range. He threw his slider most often at 84 mph, but he did have a few at 82 or 83.
6) Gabe Speier had a tidy top of the fourth, going 1-2-3 and hitting 95-96. Eduard Bazardo threw to three batters in the fifth, walking one, hitting one and throwing a wild pitch. He also generated a pop-up.
7) Cole Young had two walks and a strikeout, flashing his trademark good eye and solid discipline at the plate.
