(ABC 6 News) – President Trump has launched a new website, TrumpRx.gov, to provide discounts on popular and high-priced medicines.

The non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation reports that about one in five Americans have not filled a prescription due to cost. TrumpRx aims to address this issue.

“We’re definitely on board, or would encourage any administration’s way to decrease drug costs,” said Philip Hommerding, pharmacist and owner of Hunts Silver Lake Drug and Gift in Rochester.

Hommerding expressed skepticism about TrumpRx’s impact on his pharmacy, noting that many listed medications are not widely prescribed.

“A lot of the medications that are on there, are only used by a very small portion of patients and so they are just not largely prescribed,” he said.

The site targets uninsured patients paying out of pocket, offering discounts at pharmacies if the drug is available. “Some of the medications you can get here and we can dispense, some of the manufacturer programs are that you click on the Trump Rx and you say, I want this medication, it shifts you to the companies website,” Hommerding said.

Currently, TrumpRx lists over 40 prescription drugs, including Airsupra and Ozempic, with discounts between 60-80%. Joel Farley, a professor at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, emphasized the importance of patients maintaining a consistent pharmacist.

“If you’re no longer filling your drugs at the same location, it’s important to let your pharmacist know about these other medications because there could be drug interactions, there could be side effects and other things,” said Farley.

Despite its limitations, some see TrumpRx as a positive step.

“It’s a great thing, realistically we got to get rid of the shell game that comes with pricing and charging a high prices and giving PBM and rebates, that’s where the problem really lies,” said Hommerding.

The website officially launched on Feb. 5. You can find a link to it here.
