A Montreal resident is facing several charges following a months long investigation into a report of fraudulent activity.

Upper Ottawa Valley OPP says it launched a criminal investigation in Sept. 2025 after an area resident reported fraud while attempting to purchase an automobile on an online marketplace.

Police say the victim reported paying a deposit to an individual claiming to be a car dealer, but the vehicle was never delivered.

Investigators attended a residence in Hawkesbury, Ont. on Feb. 27. Following the investigation, 24-year-old Anaique Fankam Kakanou of Montreal has been charged with three Criminal Code offences. They include:

Fraud under $5,000;

Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000;

Personation with intent to obtain property – identity theft.

The accused was released from custody pending a bail hearing.

Anyone who is a victim of fraud is encouraged to contact local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
