An Original Six franchise has emerged as a potential landing spot for Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, as rumors continue to swirl about his future.

Just like that, the Winter Olympics are officially over and everyone’s attention turns to the National Hockey League’s trade deadline, which is only 11 days away and could be a busy one for the Vancouver Canucks and General Manager Patrik Allvin.

The Vancouver Canucks have publicly stated that they are rebuilding and willing to consider almost anything, with President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford saying last month that the club is open to offers on all player leading up to the deadline.

Original Six franchise named as possible landing spot for Vancouver Canucks’ Elias Pettersson

“Obviously, every club in the National Hockey League has untouchables, but management of the Vancouver Canucks is now using the rebuild word, so they have to be open for business, open for just about anything, and that might include finally trading Elias Pettersson. Now, we know that there’s been a ton of speculation from a media perspective on Pettersson’s future with the Vancouver Canucks. That was more into the off-season, more last season than to this point.” Dreger said.

Several teams have been suggested as potential suitors for Elias Pettersson including the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings and now, the Chicago Blackhawks have entered the mix as they’re searching for some help down the middle, ideally a second line centerman to play behind Connor Bedard.

The Chicago Blackhawks have the assets necessary to complete a trade for Elias Pettersson, probably more than most clubs around the National Hockey League could offer and for that reason alone, if they truly want to acquire the Sundsvall, Sweden native, they can easily cement themselves as the favourite.

Among the assets the Blackhawks could part with to acquire Elias Pettersson include their one of their 2026 first round picks, whichever is lower due to where they sit in the standings, along with someone like Marek Vanacker, who would add a scoring element that the Vancouver Canucks desperately need in their prospect pool.

It’s going to take a lot to pry Elias Pettersson out of Vancouver and while those two assets mentioned above might seem like an overpayment, it might have to be something similar to that for Patrik Allvin to even consider moving the centerman.
