Matthew Tkachuk has been an absolute thorn in the side of Connor McDavid. For the third time in less than three years, Tkachuk and his team got the better of McDavid and his when it mattered most.
The 2023–24 Stanley Cup Finals, of course, saw Tkachuk and the Panthers take down McDavid and the Oilers in a wild, back-and-forth seven-game series for the ages. Follow that up with another meeting in the 2024–25 Finals, once again going Florida’s way, and now Tkachuk and the Americans hang on for dear life before beating out McDavid and the Canadians in overtime of the Gold Medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Pure elation on one side and heartbreak on the other — perfectly summed up in a photo after the game, showing a distraught McDavid looking on while Tkachuk celebrated, holding the American flag.
Canadian hockey fans — and Oilers fans in particular — must be sick of seeing the same script play out in the biggest games.
Winning the 4 Nations Face-Off was nice, but everyone knows the Olympics and the Stanley Cup mean more, and no matter how well McDavid and his teammates have played, they continue to fall short in agonizing fashion.
The eye test and the numbers suggest these results shouldn’t be ending this way. McDavid dominates every game, earning Conn Smythe Trophies and Olympic tournament MVP honors in losing efforts, while Tkachuk, though very effective at his own game, has been just one piece of the puzzle on his championship teams.
McDavid Tkachuk Oilers Panthers
Most viewers probably didn’t even notice either of the Tkachuk brothers in the Gold Medal game — aside from a few egregious turnovers from Brady — while McDavid looked dangerous every time he stepped onto the ice. Despite all of that, the same guy still wound up on top, leaving everyone to wonder: at what point will McDavid finally slay the dragon and win the big one?
It’s been an up-and-down 2025–26 season in Edmonton, though the Oilers do still appear poised to make the playoffs through it all. With an already extremely motivated McDavid — now left with an even more bitter taste in his mouth — maybe that moment will come this Spring. To make it even sweeter, it could come with Tkachuk and the Panthers — who have just a 15.4% chance of making the postseason — watching from home.
For now, though, Tkachuk once again got the last laugh, with McDavid forced to witness him bask in the feeling of victory.
