Franco Colapinto, Alpine, Hungaroring, 2025

Pirelli’s tyre test at the Hungaroring has been disrupted after Alpine driver Franco Colapinto suffered a crash during the morning session.

Colapinto was participating in the second day of a two-day tyre test at the Hungarian circuit, scene of last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Pirelli confirmed that Colapinto had crashed his Alpine at the 220km/h right hand kink of turn 11, disrupting the morning session. Colapinto was assessed at the on-track medical centre and released after being cleared by medics. His condition was described as “okay”.

At the time of the accident, Colapinto shared the circuit with Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari. His Alpine team mate Pierre Gasly was due to take over running in the A525 in the afternoon session.

The test is being run to support Pirelli’s development of their tyre compounds for the 2026 season, which will see a swathe of technical regulations changes with drastically different cars. Both Alpine and Ferrari were running so-called ‘mule’ cars, modified to try and better simulate the performance dynamics expected from next year’s cars.

Tuesday’s first day of the test saw Alpine participate along with McLaren and Racing Bulls. Sunday’s race winner Lando Norris took part for McLaren, with Liam Lawson also running a full day in the Racing Bulls car. Alpine reserve driver Paul Aron drove the modified Alpine over the day, setting the quickest time of the day with a 1’18.789 and covering 159 laps, the most of the three drivers.

Colapinto has participated in seven grands prix in 2025 after taking over from Jack Doohan who he replaced for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola. The 22-year-old has so far failed to score a point over those seven race weekends, achieving a best finish of 13th in both the Monaco and Canadian rounds. His team mate Gasly has scored 13 points over that same span.
