Brampton is looking for artists who can help make the city a little more attractive.
About 10 contributors are needed to convert public utility boxes into works of art.
Specifically, the artwork will be displayed on traffic control boxes throughout the city.
Successful candidates will receive $1,800 for their creations.
“This project will centre Brampton voices while representing the city’s diverse population, exploring the artists’ connections to the city, and capturing the spirit and stories of Brampton,” according to the city. “This opportunity is focused on helping emerging artists build their portfolios.”
Some themes to consider, which align with Brampton: An Artful Future Municipal Public Art Strategy, include:
Celebrate and reflect Brampton’s unique identity, diversity, and multiculturalism.
Honour Indigenous living heritage.
Highlight the city’s distinctive communities and natural heritage features.
The artwork will be installed at various city intersections and must be an original design. Other considerations that participants should consider are that the work must be public-friendly and non-commercial, and that the creations should deter graffiti.
AI-created images are not eligible for consideration.
Final submissions, if selected, should be at a resolution of 300 dpi, scaled to 50 per cent of the actual cabinet size.
You can download and use the Traffic Box Template to create a representation of the proposed artwork (e.g., drawing, digital design, photography, etc.).
The work that is chosen will be based on the design’s connection to Brampton,
Connection to Brampton (40 per cent): Demonstrates a strong connection to the local Brampton community, includes current and former residents, and artists with a strong connection to Brampton.
Proposed Digital Illustration/Concept (40 per cent): Effectively communicates the artist’s unique and original perspective while addressing the public art opportunity’s goals and themes.
Portfolio/Emerging Artist (20 per cent): The submission and samples of past work provide confidence that the artist can successfully carry out or learn to execute the proposed work.
