Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — is investigating an in-custody death that occurred in Edmonton over the weekend.
The Edmonton Police Service says around 8 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a report of an assault at a multi-unit shared living facility near 129 Avenue and 119 Street.
When officers arrived, they found a person who matched reports from witnesses, who appeared to be incoherent and intoxicated.
Police say officers tried taking the man into custody but he resisted. EPS says during the arrest, the man went into medical distress, and officers called EMS and began providing medical care.
Paramedics arrived at the scene, treated the man, and took him to hospital, where he later died.
Edmonton police reported the matter to ASIRT, which has begun an investigation.
