Tennessee men’s tennis could not turn things around on Monday against Vanderbilt.

After losing to Kentucky on Saturday, the Vols dropped their second SEC matchup to the No. 37 Commodores, falling 4-2.

The doubles pairings were switched around, with Jan Kobierski replacing Dragos Cazacu. Kobierski was paired with Vols star Alejandro Moreno. The duet salvaged two breaks en route to a 6-2 victory over Vanderbilt’s Hugo Coquelin and Jack Satterfield. This would end up being Tennessee’s lone doubles win of the afternoon.

Jose Garcia and Piotr Siekanowicz, another new pairing, were broken in the early stages of the match. Unfortunately, that is all Vanderbilt’s Nathan Cox and Hoyoung Roh needed as they held their own to take the match, 6-2.

The only duo that stayed consistent was Ethan Muza and Shion Itsusaki. Itsusaki, who has seen success across all settings, saw a rare loss today with Muza. Similar to their teammates’ fate, it only took one break for Pablo Martinez Gomez and Danil Panarin of the Commodores to win the match, 6-4.

To open singles, Moreno faced Roh in the only match today that would go three sets. Moreno handily won the first set 6-2. Roh bounced back to win the second set, 6-2. Then the decisive third set saw Roh win by break and defeat Moreno, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. A common trend amongst recent Tennessee singles matches has seen the Vols win the first set, but drop the following two.

Dragos Cazacu made his only appearance today against Martinez Gomez. He did not have much to show, winning just four total games across two sets of play. Vanderbilt won the second doubles match 6-2, 6-2.

The Vols’ Garcia has been outstanding as of late. He continued his stellar play, dominating Panarin. His serve was on point from start to finish as he won 6-1, 6-2.

Kobierski looked to continue his recent good run against Cox. This is where things started to slow down for Kobierski. Cox controlled his service games and got a multitude of breaks. This led to a comfortable victory 6-2, 6-1.

Boruch Skierkier put on the final match for the Vols today. In a relatively close one, Skierkier needed just one break in each set to defeat Satterfield of Vanderbilt. In straight sets, Skierkier won 6-3, 6-4.

All eyes were on freshman Itsusaki, but the match against Coquelin went unfinished in the first set. It was 30-30 as Coquelin led 5-4.

The Vols will head back to Knoxville as they host Auburn on Friday, Feb. 27.
