“Initial reports indicate that the subject opened fire on the agent, at which time the agent returned fire,” Scott said in a statement, via The Associated Press. “CBP is co-operating fully with investigators.”

The FBI, CBP and U.S. Attorney’s Office did not provide additional details on the suspect or the circumstances that led to the shooting. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said they would release more information if the person ends up being charged.

Pittsburg is about 240 km north of New Hampshire’s capital of Concord and the area borders Maine and Vermont as well. The shooting took place near a usually quiet rural crossing.
