Surrey council has approved a $3.6 million contract for MBG Buildings Inc. to design and build a covered multi-sports box at Unwin Park in Newton, located at 13313 68 Avenue.

The spending limit for the $3,644,756.89 contract is set at $4,009,232.58.

“Unwin Park is home to an array of outdoor sports and recreational amenities. The construction of a covered multi-sport box will provide an all-season outdoor amenity for multiple sports such as ball hockey, basketball, pickleball and lacrosse,” Laurie Cavan, Surrey’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, noted in corporate report before council.

Construction of the 185-foot by 80-foot box – with a pre-engineered steel roof, lighting and landscaping – is expected to begin this month and be completed by December 30.

Councillor Harry Bains said this will be well-received by Newton residents.

“This is a way to keep the youth in the community active, it’s a way to keep kids out of trouble,” he said.

Councillor Gordon Hepner said he’s “really excited for this active recreation to be placed in Unwin because we’re going to be able to use it 12 months of the year and ball hockey is one of the fastest growing sports that I have seen in Surrey.”

Councillor Doug Elford is also glad for the year-round use it will provide. “We’re going to see a lot of groups out of there,” he said, “and I’m assuming the pickleballers will want to get it on it too, so I look forward to the allocation debate that comes with it.”
