Stop by the Felix Morley Community Centre in Five Cays any weekday afternoon. You’ll hear loud thuds as boxers-in-training pound the heavy bag, tap-tap-taps as they skip the jump rope, and the musical rhythm of punches hitting hand pads.
Some days, it’s even noisier (and more exciting) when sparring takes place in the boxing ring. Suited up with protective gear, a growing group of young boxers practise the skills taught them by Gary Lightbourne, TCI’s only former professional boxer, over the last two years since the Centre opened. Over it all, you’ll hear “Lightning Lightbourne’s” constant advice, encouragement, and wisdom—filled with passion at passing on knowledge that he never got when he was a young boxer.
Some of you may have attended the exciting match in April 2025 at the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex hosted by the TCI Sports Commission. In their first-ever fights, the TCI boxers did very well against more seasoned amateurs from Canada. They can’t wait to compete again!
To move forward, the non-profit TCI Boxing Federation must be formed. Gary explains, “Our fighters cannot officially compete and add to their record until this happens. We have many opportunities coming up this year for the TCI fighters to compete in Florida and several Caribbean countries. We also want to be part of the new Caribbean Boxing Association.”
On Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Felix Morley Community Centre there will be a vote to ratify the TCI Boxing Federation Constitution and choose Executive Committee members.
As head coach of the TCI Boxing Team Gary explains, “We need members and sponsors to make this happen. If you are interested, I encourage you to call me for more information, stop by the gym, or come to the meeting on February 28. We have a lot of talent and potential here in the country and it’s time to show the world what we’re made of.”
