The conversation around Dhurandhar continues months after its theatrical release, with fresh criticism now coming from tech entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia. The Hotmail co-founder took to Instagram to express strong reservations about the film, calling out what he described as its emphasis on revenge and sensationalism.

Directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh, the espionage drama released in theatres in December last year and later began streaming on Netflix in January. While the film has been a commercial juggernaut, it has also sparked polarised reactions online.

“Engineered to Trigger You”

Sharing a video review, Bhatia captioned his post: “Movies today aren’t made to emotionally empower you. They’re engineered to trigger you. Be cautious!”

In the video, he said, “I just watched Dhurandhar. Emotionally charged, sensationalism, drama — but where is the intellectual component in this? All it is spreading is the message of revenge and hate. It’s disgusting.”

He further raised concerns about the potential impact of such narratives on younger viewers. “We don’t want our kids to be emotional reactors. We want the younger generation to be logical thinkers. Zero creativity. I know it’s a movie, but I don’t think there is any entertainment in watching senseless killings and revenge. It promotes a certain line of thinking that is terrible,” he said.

Bhatia also criticised what he perceived as the film’s broad portrayal of geopolitical themes. “It paints entire countries and institutions with a broad brush. Not going into nuances of what is really going on in the minds of people. Individuals are good or bad, not countries. I hope you get this message and reject the movie Dhurandhar wholeheartedly,” he concluded.

Dhurandhar follows the story of an Indian spy who infiltrates a Baloch gang operating in Pakistan’s Lyari. Alongside Ranveer Singh, the film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles. The franchise is set to expand with Dhurandhar: The Revenge, scheduled for a theatrical release on March 19. The sequel will reportedly clash at the box office with Toxic.
