Peel police seized an illegal firearm during a traffic stop in Brampton last week, the ninth firearm seizure since the start of the year. Two men were arrested and face a number of charges as a result.
On the morning of Feb. 18, officers launched a traffic stop on a vehicle close to Main Street and Brickyard Way, police said in a news release. An occupant of the vehicle was detained by officers, and a search was conducted.
While the search was taking place, another occupant fled on foot, though he was eventually taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle produced a loaded illegal handgun and magazine with ammunition.
Jamal Reid, 28, of Brampton and Derek Asiedu, 27, of no fixed address were arrested and charged with multiple drug and firearm offences.
A full list of charges can be found here.
Peel police said that since 2024, 161 firearms have been seized by their officers, 30 per cent of which came from traffic stops.
